You went to Wisconsin in February?

By: Korrie Johnston, Communications Supervisor

While you may think February is not the greatest time to visit Wisconsin (Snow! Ice! Cold!), the result of LCDNR’s recent trip to “America’s Dairyland” to learn from other parks professionals about their paperless permit system proved fruitful beyond measure.

Implementing a paperless, automated license plate reader system to replace paper permits is a strategic priority of COMPASS and a leading goal of the department. Everyone can agree on that, but how do you begin transitioning an entire system we have been using for decades? Slowly, systematically, and with some help from friends.

The last week of February, LCDNR staff members traveled to Waukesha County in Wisconsin to do an immersive training with the staff in the Department of Parks and Land Use about the trials and tribulations of implementing a paperless permit system, which Waukesha County had completed just a year prior.

Their staff completely rolled out the red carpet for us! No question was left unasked, and no problem was left a mystery. From witnessing implementation behind the scenes, to understanding strategy and budget woes, and how to deal with difficult customers, along with their team’s greatest lessons learned, our team left the Midwest feeling hopeful and excited about how this technology and process can greatly improve efficiencies and visitor experience in Larimer County.

Above all - our team left with a bunch of new, smart, and very generous Waukesha team friends who will support us throughout this process and for that, we are forever grateful.

More to come of this new adventure in future stories!

Sharing a message received after our return to Colorado from the Director of Waukesha Parks:

Hey Team Larimer!

Regrettably, I missed closing out the day with you.  Rebecca briefed me on your stay.  I am so impressed to hear of your commitment to learn and high level of engagement.  The residents and visitors to Larimer County are no doubt in great hands.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to our talent.  They are thrilled to support your work.

Safe travels and we look forward to learning of your accomplishments.

Your new Wisconsin teammates.
