Committed to our everyday work

By: Hannah Beam, Ranger

During the all-staff meeting last month, our Department Director, Daylan Figgs introduced the concept of how the collection of staff’s everyday work from all corners of our Department is vital to our success. This work often goes unnoticed or acknowledged despite how fundamentally important it is to meeting our mission.

He gifted each of us with a new pair of ‘on the ground’ socks that represent this mindset towards making it happen each and every day. This experience got me thinking during the last massive wind storm on April 7, which wrecked havoc on our docks at Carter Lake. Many trees were also downed overnight and power to the area was turned off to prevent wildfire.

Just a normal day at the office? For many, no way. In Natural Resources, it can be!

Following the storm, Maintenance Supervisor, Brette Southworth was caught in the wild wearing her ‘on the ground’ socks and wading into the water to recover and secure the North Shore docks, which had been thrown off their anchors and had floated across the lake. This “everyday work” and the willingness to take action allowed the Carter Lake area to get back to normal operation as soon as possible.

Thanks to Brette for her commitment to the everyday work at Carter Lake and to all of our team working to connect our visitors to nature.
